Kid’s Sand Sculpture Contest Rules

Rules: Each site may be up to 20 x20 feet. It helps to stake the corners and rope off your space. All objects used in your sculpture should be natural materials found on the beach, i.e. seaweed, driftwood, shells, pebbles, and feathers. We discourage the use of man-made materials. Forms may be used in the construction but must be removed prior to judging. Remember to make sure that your sculpture is within the designated area (there will be signs). Sculptures located outside the designated area are not considered part of the contest and will not be judged.

5 Tips for Fostering Sand Play Creativity in Children

1.    Solicit a high volume of different ideas, but resist the urge to evaluate the ideas your kids come up with. At dinnertime, for example, you could brainstorm activities for the upcoming weekend, encouraging the kids to come up with things they’ve never done before. Don’t point out which ideas aren’t possible, and don’t decide which ideas are best. The focus of creative activities should be on process: generating (vs. evaluating) new ideas.

2.    Emphasize process rather than product. One way you can do this is by asking questions about the process – Did you have fun? Are you finished? What did you like about your sand sculpture?

3.    Allow kids the freedom and autonomy to explore their ideas and do what they want. External constraints—making them build your version of a sand sculpture something a particular way, so to speak—can reduce flexibility in thinking. In one study, just demonstrating how to put together a model reduced the creative ways that kids accomplished this task.

4.    Encourage kids to make mistakes and fail. Yes, fail – kids who are afraid of failure and judgment
will curb their own creative thought. Share the mistakes you’ve made recently,
so they get the idea that it is okay to make a mistake.

5.    Provide active recognition: Clearly observing what a child is doing without
any evaluation or judgement, just detailed observation, you say what you see.

Active Recognition Examples:

“I see that you are sculpting your castle with all sorts of objects
and shapes.”

“Check you out! you are really taking your time building your sand
sculpture the way you see fit.”
